What is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of therapy and beautiful spiritual art originated in Japan in the early 20th that aims to increase energy levels and promote relaxation and wellbeing. The underlying philosophy of reiki is that if a person’s energy is low, they are more likely to be unwell or stressed. If it is high, however, they are more capable of being happy and feeling well.
Reiki is a type of energy healing and is a complementary therapy. The Japanese word Reiki means universal energy. It aims to relax you, ease stress and tension and help with well being.
Reiki is based on the idea that we all have an unseen “life force energy” that flows through our bodies, according to the International Center for Reiki Training. A Reiki practitioner gently moves their hands just above or on the client’s clothed body, with the intention of reducing stress and promoting healing by encouraging a healthy flow of energy.
In this gentle touch therapy, the therapist places their hands or the client's hands on various locations on the client's body to promote relaxation and a sense of calm.
The Reiki practitioner uses their hands to guide them to where the life force energy needs to go to encourage healing.
The Reiki belief system and that of the practitioner is that they do not cause the healing, nor are they the source of that healing energy; they are a channel for the energy.
What happens in a Reiki session?
A Reiki practitioner typically gives Reiki treatment in a peaceful, private setting. During a session, the client will sit in a comfortable chair or lie on a massage table (plinth), fully clothed. You will receive the Reiki healing treatment in my therapy room.
The practitioner will then place their hands and palms lightly on or over specific areas of the client’s head, feet, limbs, and torso. They will typically keep their hands in these positions for 3–10 minutes. This can vary of course according to what the Reiki practitioner feels.
If there is a particular injury, such as a burn, or an area that needs special attention, the practitioner will hold their hands just above the wound or the area needing attention.
While the Reiki practitioner holds their hands lightly on or over the body, an energy transfer takes place. During this time, the practitioner may report that their hands feel cold, warm or are tingling. They will hold each hand position until they sense that the energy has stopped flowing.
When the practitioner feels that the energy, in their hands has gone, they will remove their hands and place them over a different body area.
There is very little to no talking during sessions, which last 60 minutes. An essential piece is the presence and state of being of the Reiki practitioner, whose training also includes ways to support their own “grounding.”
What are the main benefits of Reiki healing?
Reiki aids relaxation, assists in the body’s natural healing processes, and develops emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Reiki can induce deep relaxation, help people cope with difficulties, relieve emotional stress, and improve overall well-being.
Reiki is linked to a range of physical and emotional health benefits, including better sleep, improved mood, and pain relief in published studies. Research suggests Reiki helps the body return to a state of relaxation, which allows it to potentially better heal from damage brought on by stress, injury, or disease. There is evidence that Reiki, used as a complementary therapy with conventional or mainstream medical care, can help people recover after surgery and manage symptoms of cancer and AIDS.
Reiki 5 top health benefits:
- Improved mood and. emotional well-being.
- Reduced stress and increased relaxation.
- Better sleep, improved insomnia symptoms.
- For people undergoing surgery, lower blood pressure, anxiety, and pain rates.
- For people with cancer, improved anxiety and. pain management.
It is important to note that Reiki should never take the place of medical treatments and should be used alongside the client’s regular treatment. For instance, some people with cancer may find Reiki beneficial as it may help them relax. The gentle nature of Reiki therapy may have a soothing effect on patients who find that they become overwhelmed with invasive therapy, fear, and stress.
Medical studies show the benefits of reiki for individuals with chronic illnesses, disease such as cancer, and for the elderly. While trials have shown that reiki cannot necessarily cure a disease, it has been validated by professionals and is used to complement Western Medicine.
How many Reiki sessions will I need and are Reiki treatments covered by health insurances?
Sometimes one Reiki session is enough to resolve whatever the issue you are experiencing, and sometimes it takes several sessions. As I start working on you, I will be able to give you a better idea of how often you should come, depending
on the issue you’d like to address.
You can space out the sessions according to your needs and schedule. Studies recommend trying out at least four sessions to evaluate the potentail benefits of Reiki for you.
Keep in mind though that Reiki is a spiritual practice, and you can receive it as often as you’d like as it is absolutely safe. Some clients come in once a month for relaxation and stress management, whereas other clients treat themselves to a Reiki session
once in a while.
Reiki has just recently started to be recognized by insurance companies. While not many are covering Reiki treatments, some are definitely covering part of the sessions fees. It is really worth checking with your local health insurance company for further details.
